Ethereum Gears Up for Fusaka Upgrade: Scalability Boost Incoming

The Ethereum network is preparing for its next major upgrade, Fusaka, which aims to drastically improve how the mainnet handles data from layer-2 networks. Developers are optimistic that this change will make rollups more affordable and scalable.

Nick Johnson, co-founder of the Ethereum Name Service, highlights the upgrade as a sign of Ethereum's maturity, focusing on "refining efficiency, decentralization, and resilience."

Key Improvements

Fusaka, following the Pectra upgrade, primarily focuses on increasing the available blob space in each Ethereum transaction block through the PeerDAS (EIP-7594) proposal. This is seen as the cornerstone of the upgrade.

Ansgar Dietrichs of the Ethereum Foundation explains that PeerDAS fundamentally changes the nature of the chain by shifting from a naive data availability mechanism to a sampling-based one.

Blobs, introduced in the Dencun upgrade, already helped lower layer-2 gas fees by temporarily storing data from scaling networks. Fusaka is expected to increase blob capacity significantly, potentially by as much as 8x.

Alon Muroch, co-founder of SSV Labs, believes Fusaka is a pivotal step towards an interoperable Ethereum, allowing rollups to function as a unified ecosystem under Ethereum's security umbrella.

PeerDAS: A Game Changer

Vitalik Buterin has previously called PeerDAS "unprecedented," emphasizing its role as the "key to layer-2, and eventually layer-1 network scaling."

The next major upgrade, Glamsterdam, is planned for 2026 and will continue to focus on scaling both layer-1 and blob capabilities.
