Ethereum: The Developer Magnet in 2025

New data reveals Ethereum remains the leading blockchain for developers, attracting a significant influx of talent in 2025. According to the Ethereum Foundation, citing Electric Capital data, over 16,000 new developers joined the Ethereum ecosystem between January and September.

This solidifies Ethereum's position as the most actively developed blockchain, bolstered by its thriving layer-2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism.

Solana: A Rising Star

While Ethereum maintains its lead, Solana is making impressive strides. Approximately 11,500 new developers contributed code to Solana during the same period. However, the Solana Foundation suggests Electric Capital's dataset might be undercounting their actual developer figures.

Bitcoin, in comparison, attracted around 7,500 new developers.

Comparing Developer Activity

Electric Capital's tracker indicates Ethereum boasts the largest active developer base, with 31,869 developers. Solana follows with 17,708, and Bitcoin has 11,036.

Interestingly, Solana's growth rate has outpaced Ethereum's. Full-time Ethereum developers grew by 5.8% year-on-year, while Solana experienced a 29.1% increase in the same period and a 61.7% surge over two years.

Key Takeaways

  • Ethereum Dominance: Ethereum remains the leader in developer activity, attracting the largest number of new and active developers.
  • Solana's Growth: Solana exhibits rapid growth in its developer community, indicating a strong and increasing interest.
  • Data Discrepancies: Some discrepancies may exist in reported developer counts, highlighting the challenges in accurately tracking developer activity across different ecosystems.
  • Latin America: A significant portion of LatAm's developer base favors established blockchains like Ethereum and Polygon

Investment Considerations

As always, investors should consider their risk tolerance and investment timeline before making allocation decisions. Bitcoin remains a volatile asset despite increasing institutional adoption.
