Chamath Palihapitiya Eyes Another SPAC Despite Past Failures
Venture capitalist known as the 'SPAC king' plans to launch another special purpose acquisition company, undeterred by the poor performance of his previous ventures.

Palihapitiya Defies Critics, Considers New SPAC
Chamath Palihapitiya, a prominent venture capitalist and co-host of the "All-In" podcast, is reportedly considering launching another special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), even after a prior track record of losses for investors.
Despite a social media poll indicating strong opposition to the idea, Palihapitiya stated that he would likely proceed, citing interest from Wall Street and crypto figures. His previous SPAC ventures have largely underperformed the S&P 500 since their launch. Some companies like Proterra and Sunlight Financial even filed for bankruptcy.
What are SPACs?
SPACs, also known as blank-check companies, offer a way for private companies to go public by merging with an already publicly traded shell company. This process aims to circumvent the traditional IPO process and associated regulatory hurdles.
Performance Concerns
Data reveals that many of Palihapitiya's previous SPACs have significantly underperformed the market. Several, such as Virgin Galactic and OpenDoor Technologies, have seen substantial declines in their stock value. Not all of his SPAC's have been unsuccessful though, with MP Materials having a substantial return.
Goldman Sachs Re-entering SPAC Market
News of Palihapitiya's potential return to the SPAC market coincides with reports that Goldman Sachs is ending its three-year hiatus from SPAC involvement.
